While the UCI Libraries carry and subscribe to a vast collection of books and scholarly resources, a large selection of equipment, gadgets, and apparatuses are also available to check out at no additional cost.

Students, faculty, and staff in need of a laptop can borrow 13-inch Macbooks and iPads for 48 hours. Course-related necessities such as scientific calculators are also available and can be checked out for up to 3 months. The Libraries also have specialized devices such as Canon cameras, camcorders, a PlayStation 3, and even a virtual reality headset available for checkout, for up to 48 hours.

ASUCI Donations

Over the last five years, the Associated Students of the University of California, Irvine (ASUCI) Academic Resources and Visions Leadership Commissions have helped supply much of this equipment for the Libraries.

Just last year, ASUCI donated over $7,000 in materials and equipment. Kristine Ferry, head of access and operations at UCI Libraries, has helped guide ASUCI student efforts to provide equipment students need to be successful.

“One way the Libraries strive to level the playing field is by making different technology and equipment available to all students,” she said. “We also aim to offer a welcoming and comfortable environment that is conducive to studying.”

Some of the most recently donated equipment consists of student essentials such as phone chargers, headphones, and lab coats. There are innovative items, such as a white noise machine with 20 different sounds, portable fans, and a light therapy lamp with UV-free light as well.

This equipment can be checked out with a UCI ID for up to 3 hours by visiting the front desk of the Langson and Science Libraries and enjoyed in the comfort of your room or in the library.
