Tired of pop-ups and paywalls blocking you from the latest news?

UCI Libraries are here to help! Current UCI students, staff, and faculty have free access to The New York Times, The Orange County Register, The Washington Post, Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal websites.

IMPROVED USER EXPERIENCE

Although UCI Libraries have provided access to a variety of newspapers such as The New York Times through databases since the 1990s, newer licenses allow users to view previously restricted features like images and webpage layouts. Instead of having to search for articles in a database using keywords, users can now access content directly on the news websites.

“Part of the libraries’ overarching goal is to help people stay informed about the world and to provide the means to do so,” said Cynthia Johnson, who is head of the reference department and Grunigen Medical Library. “These websites are a natural progression of what we’ve done historically.”

Becky Imamoto, head of the UCI Libraries collection strategies department, echoed Johnson’s sentiment: “By doing it this way, we can offer a much more pleasurable experience and make it easier for our patrons to navigate and read the news.”

UCI Libraries are hoping to expand their subscriptions in the future to include additional news websites. This access depends on the offerings of each individual news source. The Los Angeles Times, for example, does not currently offer a site license that UCI Libraries could purchase.

Along with UCI Libraries’ news subscriptions, users can continue to access thousands of historical, local, international, national, and alternative newspapers using the databases and links provided in the Libraries’ News & Newspapers research guide.

OBTAINING ACCESS

UCI affiliates can consult the News & Newspapers research guide for further information about the Libraries’ news subscriptions, access, and the process of creating an account, which The New York Times, Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal require for on-campus and off-campus access of their websites.

After creating an account, users can access selected news websites without being connected to the campus VPN (virtual private network) and from their respective mobile apps. Account renewals must then be done every four years for The New York Times for all UCI affiliates and every year for The Wall Street Journal for UCI staff and faculty.

Special benefits such as teaching resources from The New York Times in Education website, special events in addition to podcasts from The Wall Street Journal, and special events from The Washington Post are also included with the subscriptions.
