The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War. To commemorate the sacrifices of those who fought during the war on behalf of both the United States and South Vietnam, as well as the narratives of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees who fled the war’s aftermath, a special, limited-run exhibit, Remembering Saigon: Journeys through and from Guam, will be on display in the UC Irvine Libraries Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive (OC&SEAA) Center from January through May 2025.

A collaboration of the UC Irvine Libraries Southeast Asian Archive (SEAA) and the UCLA Asian American Studies Department, the exhibit highlights how the stories of Vietnamese refugees, CHamorus, and nonnative Guamanians became intertwined during the Vietnam War period and its aftermath.

By examining Guam’s participation during the Vietnam War, Remembering Saigon highlights its important role in processing Vietnamese refugees after the fall of Saigon. With a focus on Vietnamese refugees and CHamoru veterans living in Southern California, the exhibit features materials from UC Irvine Libraries’ SEAA and excerpts from a UC Irvine oral history project.
